• Summary

GEMS-TECH project is an ambitious initiative aimed at reshaping maritime education in Egypt and

Kenya by fully integrating sustainable maritime practices and green technologies into the educational

frameworks of higher institutions. The endeavor will systematically develop and introduce new

interdisciplinary modules that focus on sustainable maritime solutions, ensuring a comprehensive

modernization of existing courses to align with global green initiatives and the evolving needs of the

maritime industry. By enhancing the competencies of both academic staff and students in sustainable

maritime technologies, GEMS-TECH intends to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and

practical application, fostering a generation of maritime professionals who are well-equipped to

contribute to the sustainability of the maritime sector.

The project will also foster strong partnerships between academic institutions and key stakeholders in

the maritime industry, promoting innovation in green shipping and contributing to environmental

sustainability and economic resilience in the sector. Through a series of targeted training, capacity-

building activities, and the development of open-access online resources such as MOOCs, GEMS-

TECH aims to disseminate cutting-edge knowledge and best practices in green maritime technologies

widely, reaching an extensive audience beyond the immediate academic community.

This initiative is strategically positioned to address the urgent need for environmental stewardship within

the maritime industry, offering a comprehensive approach to education that is aligned with the United

Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By preparing a skilled workforce adept in green economic

principles and practices, GEMS-TECH will play a crucial role in driving forward the agenda for

sustainable development in the maritime sector, enhancing the employability of graduates, and ensuring

the modernization of the industry to meet contemporary challenges.

The involvement of industry stakeholders ensures the curriculum's relevance and the practical

applicability of the project outcomes, addressing the immediate and future needs of the maritime sector

for sustainable development. GEMS-TECH represents a visionary step towards harmonizing maritime

education with global sustainability efforts, setting a new standard for educational initiatives in the region

and serving as a model for future projects worldwide.
