• Summary

In the project, the Egyptian and German teams are intending to present proof of concept for wideband tunable MEMS based semiconductor quantum dot swept laser for gas sensing applications. The semiconductor quantum dots amplifier fabricated at IHFG institute are envisioned to be included in a swept laser configuration with in-loop deeply-etched MEMS Fabry-Perot filter provided by the Egyptian partners. The MEMS filter would provide ultra-wide band optical tuneabilty. The 0D density of states of the semiconductor quantum dots provides fast carrier dynamics, broadened gain spectrum, reduced threshold current, temperature independence, and low relative intensity noise. The merits of the MEMS optical filter and semiconductor quantum dots would enable a swept laser with improved instantaneous spectral width, tuning range, speed and stability targeting gas-sensing applications in the near infrared region.
