Summary
There is a great need for a Nation-wide Egyptian Bioinformatics Network in Egypt. There is also a great need to develop standardized guidelines through an assembly of Bioinformatics expert’s in this network, including experts in Medicine, Pharmacy, Medical Sciences, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, and Ethics. We aim at assessing the current situation regarding the challenges and opportunities faced by Bioinformatics in Egypt, providing a national Bioinformatics network designed to bridge the inter disciplinary gaps on Biotechnology information and establish link among scientists in Academia and organisations involved in R&D and manufacturing activities in the country, coordinating efforts to access Biotechnology information worldwide including establishing linkages with some of the international resources of Biotechnology information, designing future studies such as large-scale molecular studies, clinical trials, and pharmacogenetics studies aiming to apply Bioinformatics to serve Egyptians and assisting healthcare providers in evidence-based clinical decision-making in their preparation for future adopting of Precision Medicine in diseases with genetic bases among the Egyptian population.
The Bioinformatics National Network will be organized and linked to regional portals for the purpose of sharing resources and encouraging the communication and data transfer among Egyptian medical institutes and potential future International collaborators. For that end; a comprehensive map for the research facilities involved in Bioinformatics research and resources all over Egypt will be constructed, analyzed, and used to determine the existing gaps.
Several outcomes and effective impacts are expected as a freely accessed database for genetic diseases and pharmacogenetics in the Egyptian population, improved citation index and global recognition of the Egyptian Bioinformatics database as reference for North Africa. This map will be a comprehensive map for the Bioinformatics research-related facilities all over Egypt with detailed resources, and several sets of recommendations and standardized guidelines for adopting the Precision Medicine in Egypt.
