Summary
The purpose of this research project is to digitally document the tangible and intangible heritage of the old heritage town of Luxor. Its aim is to facilitate digital and technology knowledge growth and research capability in Egypt around preserving, protecting and sustaining the tangible and intangible heritage of Luxor through digital documentation (digital map) of heritage buildings and sites and interviews with the city’s elderly collating heritage stories unveiling historic underpinnings of current cultural activities and will give voice to the Luxor local community. This emerging cross-disciplinary project will address the significant technology and cultural heritage challenges faced by Egypt and the wider-North Africa region today, where many cities are losing their identity and heritage due to lack of comprehensive Cultural Heritage Management Decision Making Process.
The potential impact of this project will be achieved through:
1. interdisciplinary and multi-level exchange of knowledge and state-of-the-art expertise, which will in turn increase capacity and capability in the partner Institutions in Egypt.
2. Engagement with research students, early-career academics, senior academics, end-users, policymakers and the public.
3. The proposed collaboration through the projects network will provide further prompts for cooperation to carry out further collaborative projects.
4. The impact of the project on sustainable development will propose new challenges and it will be beneficial for the welfare and development of local communities.
5. Providing an interdisciplinary network to preserve and sustain Luxor tangible and intangible heritage will impact on the growth and sustainability of the heritage tourism industry.
